A European Standard for commercial fire sprinkler systems has been published, giving copper a vital role to play in combatting fires in buildings. The BSI standard EN 12845, which describes design and installation criteria for fire sprinkler systems, covers sprinkler systems for schools, museums, restaurants, hospitals, hotels, offices, dairies, bakeries and breweries.

Copper pipework can be used for both domestic and commercial fire sprinkler systems.

Designed to detect and control fire automatically in the early stages, sprinklers limit the growth of fire and minimise potential smoke, fire and water damage.  When a fire starts only the sprinkler heads affected by the heat of the fire operate.  The sprinkler heads are extremely reliable and are only activated by temperature, not smoke.  Sprinklers should ideally be used throughout the whole building.
